Women in Evangelism: In Touch with our WM Division Director

Waveney Martinborough , WM Director
Inter America Division

Our evangelistic theme for the year of evangelism is “Bringing in the Sheaves.” The goal is to double, possibly triple, our highest number of yearly baptisms and involve every Christian woman in some type of evangelism, for “the labor of all is needed.”

The plan has two parts. First, division-wide campaigns with a four-phase strategy. Second, an office campaign to involve the female staff members (two department directors and the secretaries) of the division office.

So far, Evelyn Omana, the Children’s Ministries director, has teamed up with five secretaries, and Waveney Martinborough, the Family and Women’s Ministries director, has teamed with four secretaries to conduct one week “reaping campaigns” in Tijuana and Cuba, which have resulted in eighty baptisms and over thirty strong decisions for further Bible studies.

In the unions, Lumine Obas, Women’s Ministries director for the Haitian Union and her husband, the Union president, conducted Family Life Evangelism which resulted in over fifty baptisms. Erna de Gomez, Women’s Ministries director for the Inter-Oceanic Mexico Union Mission, recently completed her campaign with twenty-five members added to the church. In the conferences, Doreen Morrison, Women’s Ministries director for the East Jamaica Conference, is presently engaged in a tent campaign in an area not far from Kingston, Jamaica.

Evangelismo de la Mesa (Table Evangelism) was an initiative attempted in Toluca Mexican Mission. In this one-week program Dr. Honore, Health Ministries director, and Waveney Martinborough, Women’s Ministries director, teamed up for a training program in integrated evangelism. The focus was on health, nutrition, and vegetarian cuisine. Each day there was one hour of theoretical instruction on topics such as health principles, vegetarianism, food pyramids, cholesterol, fats, and health evangelism. This was followed by an hour of practical instruction. During this time participants made and tasted recipes like “nopales” (a local food), onion salad, carrot mayonnaise served on crackers, lentil nut roast, oats and apple drink, trigo (an entrée from wheat), and simple whole wheat bread. In the end, thirty-seven people received certificates for perfect attendance. They intend to use this method as an evangelistic strategy.
