Equipping Leaders for Ministry: One Woman at a Time

E.G. White reminds us that "There is a higher purpose for woman, a grander destiny. She should develop and cultivate her powers, for God can employ them in the great work of saving souls from eternal ruin." Evangelism 465.

There is a need for women to be trained for leadership, a need that has been recognized by the WM department of the General Conference and at all levels of our church organization.

As a result, a Leadership Certification program has been developed that can be used to train our women to effectively fill leadership roles in our church. This will be distributed through the division WM departments

Much time, prayer and work has gone into this program. The seminars used have all been authored by women of our church. We at the GC WM department are very happy to make this material accessible to all women of our church.

The curriculum for this program has been divided into eight subject areas. They are:

History and Philosophy (HP),
Biblical Studies (BS),
People Skills/Personal Growth (PS),
Speaking Skills (SS),
Leadership Skills (LS),
Writing Skills (WS),
Nurture Projects (NP),
Outreach Projects (OP).

Due to the many subjects covered in the curriculum (about 58 in all) the program is separated into three levels. Every level will contain seminars from each of the eight subject areas of the curriculum.

In order for certification to be awarded the participant must complete all the required courses in a particular level-these are called Core Requirements. In addition to this, the participant must also complete three other seminars of their choice from among the remaining courses, called Electives.

We are excited about the potential for change and growth in the lives of the women who will take this course. We believe this program will make a difference. It is our hope and prayer that not only will it fill a need but it will also strengthen women for greater ministry in their lives and in our churches.

Welcome Gilda!


Gilda Almeida

 

Gilda Almeida joined the Department of Women's Ministries on April 1. She serves as administrative secretary to associate director, Heather-Dawn Small and also handles responsibilities related to the WM resources and the departmental budget. Her ability to speak and read English, Spanish and Portuguese will be a great benefit to the department in the production of resources.

Married and mother to two adorable children-a boy and a girl- she will have a new addition to the family in June.

Gilda is a children's Sabbath School teacher at her church. She enjoys traveling. We are very happy to have Gilda on board!

DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS

Eastern Africa Division (EAD)

WM Director Holds Seminars

Priscilla Ben, EAD WM director, held seminars for the Malawi Union and presented lectures on how ladies can witness and take an active part in the church. The Health Services director, Florence Chipunga, gave a presentation to help WM leaders assist others caring for AIDS victims. Instruction in drafting wills was given by three lawyers, with Ben chairing the meeting.

Malawi Woman Wins Souls

Thirty-three souls were baptized into the Adventist church following an evangelistic campaign in Malawi last summer due to the efforts of Mrs. Serina Kadyakale. Among those baptized were two pastors from the Zambezi Church of Christ and a witch doctor. The WM of the Malawi Union held more than 60 efforts last year.


Northern Asia-Pacific Division (NSD)

KUC Women Arise!

Korean Adventist Women's Association (KAWA), organized under Korean Union Conference Women's Ministries Department in 1998, now have associations in the five local Conferences. Their motto is " Women! Arise and Shine!" Here are some highlights of their activities:

  1. Adventist Women's Choir, under KUC WM and organized in 1994, had a retreat in the Deer Mountain near Seoul in February, 2002, and rededicated themselves to the Lord for the year's mission. They met with its conductor, Sung Kyu Im, a well-known tenor singer in Korea. This choir has delivered the Gospel through music for SDA and non-SDA hospitals, prisons, orphanages, and at GC Session and Korean churches in Toronto in 2000.
  2. Korean Adventist Women's Association held a retreat at Bugok in February. One hundred twenty officers from the five conferences heard messages about women's mission and leadership given by Young-Ja Nam, NSD WM director, Sunmi Lee, KUC WM director, and Hyejoo Bae, Seun Keun Son and Young Jong Joo, local Conference WM directors. WM leaders reported on health evangelisms, tape ministries, cooking classes, dress making classes, hospice, stop smoking program for women, and child care.
  3. Middle West Korean Conference's WM and its KAWA had 300 women gather for the Women's Day of Prayer on March 2. Elder Kei Hoon Shin, KUC president, preached on Sabbath morning. Seon Keun Son, WM director, emphasized that women need to pray more earnestly and to have prayer groups in every church.
  4. In 2001, the KAWA had a special fair on bean cooking and other healthful food. Thousands of citizens of Seoul enjoyed looking around the fair and tasting food. KAWA was able to broadcast the NEWSTART program through SBS, one of the big three broadcasting stations in Korea, and emphasized the importance of vegetarianism and the NEWSTART program.


Southern Asia Division (SUD)

Adult Literacy Programs

During the Celebration of Women, sponsored by the GC Women's Ministries in 2000, donations were given by participants to help with adult literacy. Thirty women in the Southern Asia Division volunteered to help with the literacy program in their spare time. With the donated funds, reading and writing materials were provided to nearly 150 women.


Trans-European Division (TED)

Adult Literacy Class Leads to Baptisms in South Sudan

An adult literacy class in the northern Uganda Maaji Central refugee camp that began in July 2001 had fifteen baptisms as a result of the Women's Ministries efforts there. The majority of the students who attended the class were women. This was particularly important, according to Valerie Fidelia, WM director for the Middle-East Union, because civil war in the South Sudan has caused great devastation and a generation of girls has grown up without education.

Also in TED, Netherlands Union WM wanted to help South Sudan. A $2100 Seeds and Sewing Project was proposed—the seeds part to enable families to have good seeds, usually quite pricey, for personal farming; the sewing part to help women purchase adequate wool to start small business enterprises. Ten village or refugee camp sites were selected. In March, the Netherlands Union presented a generous gift-of-love check from the Dutch women for Euros 2787.57, more than enough for the project. Each site will receive wool, crochet hooks, seeds, and hand hoes, and the WM of the local churches will manage the projects.

THE 7 TRAITS OF EFFECTIVE LEADERS: How Many Do You Share?

Are leaders born or made? Can you learn superior leadership skills? No one is sure, but experts have noticed seven specific actions that successful leaders carry out, regardless of the organization or cause they lead.

Effective Leaders:

Make others feel important. If your goals and decisions are self-centred, followers will lose their enthusiasm quickly. Emphasize their strengths and contributions, not your own.

Promote a vision. Followers need a clear idea of where you're leading them, and they need to understand why that goal is valuable to them. Your job as a leader is to provide that vision.

Follow the golden rule. Treat your followers the way you enjoy being treated. An abusive leader attracts few loyal followers.

Admit mistakes. If people suspect that you're covering up your own errors, they'll hide their mistakes, too, and you'll lack valuable information for making decisions.

Criticize others only in private. Public praise encourages others to excel, but public criticism only embarrasses and alienates everyone

Stay close to the action. You need to be visible to the members of your organization. Talk to people, visit other offices and work sites, ask questions, and observe how business is being handled. Often you will gain new insights into your work and find new opportunities for motivating your followers.

Make a game of competition. The competitive drive can be a valuable tool if you use it correctly. Set team goals, and reward members who meet or exceed them. Examine your failures, and celebrate your group's success.

Professional Image

We are judged by many factors—one of them is how we dress. We need to make credible first impressions. We need to look self-assured and assertive.

It is important to make an assessment of what is appropriate dress in your environment—whether this refers to a church or the place where you work.

Remember, when others observe you, they're making many conclusions about you. A conservative wardrobe is best. It is better to invest in clothing that will last you for a while than to buy items that look good, are inexpensive, but will not last.

You don't need a lot of clothing if you are creative. A couple of navy and neutral colored suits can be modified dramatically with the addition of different blouses and scarves.

In order to dress the part we must also keep in mind the following questions which help to make your professional image complete and keep everything in perspective:

Who am I? or Whose am I? 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20
What does God expect of me? Matthew 11:29
What is my purpose in life? Matthew 28:19, 20

 

Leadership Paradoxes

1. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.

2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Do good anyway.

3. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.

6. The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest people with the smallest ideas. Think big anyway.

7. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.

8. People really need help, but may attack you if you do help them. Help them anyway.

9. People favor underdogs, but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

10. Give the world the best that you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.
